Timber Door Materials

At UGS Ltd, our timber doors — including entrance, bi-fold, patio sliding, and French designs — are available in a choice of hardwood and softwood materials, each offering distinct advantages in appearance and performance. Both options can be fully customised with stains, paints, or finishes to complement any architectural style.

  • Softwood

High-quality softwood timber doors made from sustainably sourced species such as Pine, Douglas Fir, and Scandinavian Redwood. These materials are popular for their affordability, ease of working, and attractive finishes, making them an excellent option for a wide range of property styles.
Pine: A versatile and cost-effective choice, Pine is widely used for softwood entrance doors. Its light colour and fine grain make it easy to paint or stain, offering design flexibility for any home.
Douglas Fir: Known for its strength and dimensional stability, Douglas Fir features a straight grain and pale reddish tone. It strikes a good balance between durability and affordability, making it a reliable softwood option for doors.
Scandinavian Redwood: Slow-grown and denser than many other softwoods, this timber provides improved durability. Its smooth texture and light colour lend themselves to high-quality finishes, whether painted or stained.

  • Hardwood

High-quality hardwood timber doors are made from premium materials, including Oak, Sapele, and Accoya, each renowned for its strength, longevity, and natural elegance.
Oak: A traditional favorite, Oak is valued for its rich grain, durability, and resistance to daily wear. It offers a timeless, classic look that enhances both contemporary and period properties.
Sapele: This African hardwood is known for its exceptional strength and dimensional stability, featuring a fine grain and a warm reddish-brown tone. It's highly resistant to weathering, making it ideal for long-lasting entrance doors.
Accoya: A sustainable, modified timber, Accoya stands out for its outstanding durability and resistance to rot—even in challenging climates. It remains dimensionally stable, resisting warping and swelling, making it perfect for precision-crafted entrance doors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Please note that the information provided here is subject to change. For the most up-to-date details, we recommend contacting our company directly.

We provide a standard ten-year warranty, which can be extended if required by the project.

Yes, we are UKAS certified through ASSURE and provide UKAS certificate on completion.

Yes — timber is a natural material and will respond to changes in moisture and temperature, meaning slight swelling or shrinkage is expected. To mitigate this, quality timber doors often use engineered or multi‑layer construction (laminated layers with alternating grain direction) to reduce movement and maintain stability.

With proper care and maintenance, a timber door can last many decades. For example, many manufacturers offer warranties on various components (e.g. 10 years on hardware or seal units). However, the actual life depends on exposure (weather, sun, moisture), maintenance, and the quality of materials and construction used.

Timber doors come in several constructions. You’ll find solid wood (or solid core) models, engineered or laminated timber (multi‑layered), and those with veneered finishes. Engineered timber (also called multi‑layered timber) helps resist warping and maintains rigidity over time.

External timber doors can be very secure when properly designed, manufactured, and installed. Timber is naturally strong and dense, and when combined with high-quality hardware (such as multi‑point locking mechanisms, reinforced frames, and robust hinges), they can resist forced entry just as well as other door materials.
