Glazing Options for Enhanced Comfort

At UGS Ltd, all our doors can be supplied with either double or triple glazing, both designed to deliver outstanding thermal efficiency and year-round comfort. Whichever option you choose, you can expect excellent insulation and noise reduction, helping to create a quieter, more energy-efficient home.

For even greater performance, all glazing units are supplied argon-filled as standard. This inert gas reduces heat transfer through the glass, improving insulation, minimising condensation, and supporting long-term energy savings. The result is a warmer, more comfortable living environment with lower heating costs.

For enhanced security, glazing can also be specified with laminated or toughened glass, providing increased resistance to impact and greater peace of mind.

To add a personal touch, we also offer Pilkington decorative glazing, enabling you to choose from a variety of textures and patterns that enhance the character of your doors while maintaining light and privacy. For further options, explore our General Glazing, Specialised Glass, and Integral Blinds pages to discover the full range of premium glazing enhancements.

*Energy Rating show overall energy efficiency of the product. The entire window (the frame and the glass) is assessed to allow for heat loss, draughts and solar gain, giving a rating that indicates the overall impact of fitting that window in your home.

*The R Value Measures resistance to heat gain or loss. Example, a typical insulated wall has an R-value anywhere from 12 to 19.

*The U Value of the glass tells us heat loss through the glass, the glass edge and the frame.
*The G Value of the glass tells us how well the glass transmits heat from the sun.

Profile

At UGS Ltd, we supply and install timber bi-folding doors in Softwood and Hardwood. All timber bi-folds come in Standard and Slim (Heritage) profiles, each offering a unique blend of style and performance.

Softwood

High-quality softwood timber doors made from sustainably sourced species such as Pine, Douglas Fir, and Scandinavian Redwood. These materials are popular for their affordability, ease of working, and attractive finishes, making them an excellent option for a wide range of property styles.
Pine: A versatile and cost-effective choice, Pine is widely used for softwood doors. Its light colour and fine grain make it easy to paint or stain, offering design flexibility for any home.
Douglas Fir: Known for its strength and dimensional stability, Douglas Fir features a straight grain and pale reddish tone. It strikes a good balance between durability and affordability, making it a reliable softwood option for doors.
Scandinavian Redwood: Slow-grown and denser than many other softwoods, this timber provides improved durability. Its smooth texture and light colour lend themselves to high-quality finishes, whether painted or stained.

Hardwood

High-quality hardwood timber bi-fold doors are made from premium materials, including Oak, Sapele, and Accoya, each renowned for its strength, longevity, and natural elegance.
Oak: A traditional favorite, Oak is valued for its rich grain, durability, and resistance to daily wear. It offers a timeless, classic look that enhances both contemporary and period properties.
Sapele: This African hardwood is known for its exceptional strength and dimensional stability, featuring a fine grain and a warm reddish-brown tone. It's highly resistant to weathering, making it ideal for long-lasting entrance doors.
Accoya: A sustainable, modified timber, Accoya stands out for its outstanding durability and resistance to rot—even in challenging climates. It remains dimensionally stable, resisting warping and swelling, making it perfect for precision-crafted doors.

Standard Profile Timber Bi-fold doors

Standard Profile

In the UK, the standard profile size for timber bi-fold doors is typically 68mm, offering the ideal balance between strength, insulation, and traditional aesthetics. This profile depth supports modern double glazing, providing excellent thermal performance and sound insulation. Engineered timber construction ensures dimensional stability, reducing the risk of warping or twisting even in wider openings. The 68mm standard profile delivers a smooth folding action and a timeless appearance, making it a popular, high-performing choice for both traditional and contemporary timber bi-folding door systems.

Slim profile timber bi-fold doors

Slim (Heritage) Profile

The slim (Heritage) timber profile for bi-fold doors typically ranges between 56mm and 60mm, offering a refined, elegant appearance inspired by traditional joinery. This slender profile provides narrow sightlines that maximise natural light while maintaining the warmth and character of real wood. Despite its slimmer design, the engineered timber construction ensures excellent stability, insulation, and strength. Ideal for period-style homes or contemporary spaces seeking a classic aesthetic, the Heritage profile combines craftsmanship, smooth folding operation, and timeless beauty with modern performance and energy efficiency.

Please note that the information provided here is subject to change. For the most up-to-date details, we recommend contacting our company directly.

We provide a standard ten-year warranty, which can be extended if required by the project.

Yes, we are UKAS certified through ASSURE. And issue a UKAS Certificate on completion.

Timber bi‑fold doors can achieve excellent thermal performance when they incorporate engineered timber sections, draught‑proofing, and quality double or triple glazing. Good design and sealing help reduce heat loss and maintain internal comfort.

Yes — but only if they are well engineered. To mitigate wood movement, many high-quality timber bi-folds use laminated or engineered cores with alternating grain direction, which stabilises the structure. Also, careful sealing and protective finishes, particularly on end grains, help minimise moisture ingress and movement.

Timber bi‑fold doors can be very secure when fitted with modern hardware. Common options include multi‑point locking systems, internally beaded frames (to prevent glass removal), and strong hinges. Adding toughened or laminated glass further enhances security.

The number of panels in timber bi-fold doors typically ranges from 2 to 8 panels, depending on the opening size and structural requirements. Larger configurations may require reinforced tracking systems and stronger engineered timber to ensure smooth operation and long-term stability. For particularly wide openings, bi-folds can also be combined with fixed sidelights or transoms to achieve the desired span while maintaining performance and aesthetics. Custom configurations are available to suit both residential and commercial settings.
