Glass Specifications
All glass balustrades supplied and installed by UGS Ltd are manufactured to meet UK Building Regulations and British Standards (BS 6180:2011 – Barriers in and about buildings). This ensures that every installation is both safe and compliant.
We use toughened safety glass and laminated glass, depending on the application.
Toughened glass is heat-treated to be up to five times stronger than standard float glass, shattering into small, blunt fragments if broken for added safety.
Laminated glass consists of multiple layers bonded with an interlayer, meaning the glass remains intact if damaged, offering extra security and impact resistance.
Glass thickness typically ranges from 10 mm to 21.5 mm, depending on the height, loading requirements, and whether the balustrade is framed, semi-frameless, or frameless. This allows us to balance strength, transparency, and design freedom across residential and commercial projects.

Style Options
Post & Handrail – classic and robust, offering extra stability and a traditional framed look.
Post without Handrail – a minimalist alternative with slimline posts for support, retaining openness.
Frameless – sleek and contemporary, with no visible framework for uninterrupted views.
Point Fixings – glass secured with discreet bolts or brackets, ideal for a floating appearance.
Spigot – uses small base-mounted clamps to hold the glass panels in place, providing a semi-frameless finish.
Wire Rope – integrates stainless steel wire infills for a modern industrial aesthetic.

Straight Run – simple linear installations, perfect for balconies or terraces.
L-Shape – turns a corner seamlessly, often used for decking or landings.
U-Shape – encloses three sides for terraces, patios, or stairwells.

Fixings & Fixtures
All our balustrades are finished with high-grade stainless steel fixings and fixtures, ensuring durability, resistance to corrosion, and a refined appearance. From posts to clamps, every detail is engineered for longevity and style.
Design & Manifestation
Our advanced design and manifestation capabilities allow us to deliver solutions that meet the highest standards of safety while offering unlimited creative potential.
Shape:
We specialise in curved glass, enabling smooth lines and elegant architectural features that bring movement and fluidity into a design. Alongside this, our expertise in painted and patterned glass allows us to add colour, texture, or bespoke motifs, turning functional balustrades into striking design elements.
Manifestation:
The painting techniques — including laminating, enamelled finishes, silk-screen printing, and perimeter painting — provide not only aesthetic variety but also durability and low maintenance. These methods ensure that the visual impact of your balustrade endures, even in high-traffic or exposed environments.
Self-Cleaning & Solar Control Add-ons
Enhance your balustrades with self-cleaning glass, which minimises dirt and streaks for easy maintenance. For added comfort and privacy, solar control and reflective glass reduce glare, regulate heat, and provide subtle screening without compromising style.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Please note that the information provided here is subject to change. For the most up-to-date details, we recommend contacting our company directly.
For domestic use, internal balustrades must be at least 900mm high. External balustrades (e.g. for balconies/terraces) usually need to be 1100 mm. Height for openings/windows is typically 800 mm.
Safety glass is mandatory: usually toughened or laminated toughened glass. Thickness depends on usage, form, and load: for example, ~10mm for framed infill panels, ~21.5mm laminated for frameless structural systems.
Not necessarily. If the glass is strong enough (typically laminated glass with proper interlayers) and the design meets UK standards, handrails may be optional, especially in frameless systems.
Load requirements vary depending on building type. For domestic internal installations: a horizontal line load of 0.36 kN/m is typical; for external or public settings it rises (e.g. 0.74 kN/m or more) depending on occupancy and use.
Stainless steel fixings are standard. For external installations, use marine-grade stainless steel (e.g. grade 316) to resist corrosion. Fixing design, spacing and correct anchoring are important factors.
Glass balustrades are relatively low maintenance: they require periodic cleaning with non-abrasive cleaners, and inspection of fixings and seals. Special coatings (self-cleaning etc.) can reduce upkeep. Outside installations may need more attention due to weather.
