Fire-Resistant

Fire-Resistant

Advanced Protection for Safety-Critical Spaces

Unlike standard toughened, laminated, or reinforced safety glass, which can shatter within minutes of exposure to extreme heat, fire-resistant glass is specifically engineered to contain and slow the spread of fire. Ordinary glass typically fails within 3-4 minutes as temperatures reach 450°C, surpassing the material’s stability limit.

Fire-resistant glass is classified into three main categories, each offering varying levels of protection against flames, smoke, and heat transfer. These specialised glazing solutions provide critical fire resistance, acting as an essential barrier in commercial, residential, and public buildings where safety regulations demand enhanced fire protection.

At UGS Ltd, we supply high-performance fire-resistant glass solutions tailored to meet the highest safety standards, ensuring durability, compliance, and peace of mind.

Glass Fire-Resistance Classifications (EN 1350-2)

Glass Fire-Resistance Classifications (EN 1350-2)

Class E – Integrity Only

This glass prevents the passage of flames, smoke, and combustion products for a specific period but does not stop heat transfer. With up to 30 minutes of fire resistance, it is ideal for internal doors, including heritage-style doors, and can be supplied for windows, doors, and other units to meet project needs.

Perfect for: New builds and refurbishment projects in residential and commercial properties.

Class EW – Integrity & Radiation Control

Offering enhanced protection, Class EW glass limits thermal radiation to a maximum of 15 kW/m2, helping to reduce heat spread while still blocking flames and smoke. With up to 30 minutes of heat and radiation resistance.

Best suited for: purpose-built projects and commercial buildings where additional fire safety is required.

Class EI – Integrity & Insulation

Our premium fire-resistant glass provides full fire protection, preventing the spread of flames, smoke, combustion products, and heat. The temperature on the protected side remains below 140°C for a specified time, thanks to an energy- absorbing fire gel layer that becomes opaque under heat exposure, creating an effective fire barrier.

  • EI 60: Withstands fire for up to 60 minutes.
  • EI 90: Withstands fire for up to 90 minutes.
  • EI 120: Withstands fire for up to 90 minutes.

Ideal for: Curtain walling, fire-rated doors, and multi-unit residential and commercial properties.

Solar control

Solar control

Efficient Climate Regulation for All Seasons

Solar control glass is specially designed to regulate heat and sunlight, improving comfort and energy efficiency in buildings. By minimising excessive solar heat gain during summer while retaining warmth in colder months, this advanced glazing solution helps maintain an optimal indoor temperature throughout the year.

Thanks to modern advancements, a wide range of solar control glazing options is now available, offering enhanced thermal performance for both residential and commercial applications.

These glass solutions not only improve comfort during hot weather but also help to reduce heat loss in winter, contributing to lower energy costs and a more sustainable environment.

Solar control glass is classified into three main types based on its efficiency: tinted glass, which absorbs solar radiation to reduce glare and heat; reflective glass, which deflects sunlight using a metallic coating to minimise heat penetration; and multifunctional solar control glass, which combines both heat reflection and insulation properties for all-season climate control.

Accoustic

Accoustic

Superior Sound Insulation for Enhanced Comfort

Everyday noise pollution can significantly impact well-being, making sound control essential in both residential and commercial environments. To maintain a comfortable indoor atmosphere, noise levels in living spaces should ideally not exceed 45 dB.

Acoustic glass effectively reduces external noise through various methods, including increased glass thickness, varying pane thickness within double-glazed units, and wider spacing between panes. The most efficient soundproofing solution is laminated glass, especially when combined with a specialised acoustic PVB film, which significantly minimises both low and high-frequency sounds.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Please note that the information provided here is subject to change. For the most up-to-date details, we recommend contacting our company directly.

Under EN 13501‑2, E-rated glass ensures integrity—blocking flames and smoke—but does not reduce heat transfer; EW-rated glass further limits radiated heat to below 15 kW/m² while maintaining integrity; and EI-rated glass provides the highest protection by also insulating against heat, thus keeping temperatures on the unexposed side lower for a specified duration

Yes. While it is primarily engineered to reduce solar heat gain and glare during hot weather, high-performance solar control glazing—particularly those with Low‑E coatings—also helps retain warmth in winter, offering year-round comfort and energy efficiency.

Acoustic glass can significantly cut down ambient noise, often achieving reductions of up to around 45 decibels. That’s a substantial improvement over regular double glazing, which typically reduces noise by only about 30 dB.

Indeed—it often performs better structurally. The inherent curve of the glass can enhance load-bearing capacity and reduce deflection, providing both strength and architectural elegance. Advances in manufacturing now allow coated modern glass to be curved accurately, retaining high energy performance.

Back-painted glass provides a vibrant, colour-rich finish that’s both easy to clean and highly resistant to wear. It’s a versatile design solution, especially prized for splashbacks, partition walls, or decorative panels, and can be customised with virtually any colour using advanced matching technology.

While UGS Ltd supplies and installs windows, doors, conservatories, roof systems, and glazing units with integrated specialised glass, we do not offer installation for standalone specialised glass units. This is because many residential properties may not have compatible profiles to accommodate these advanced units, and in commercial settings, frameless or structural installations are typically handled by on-site contractors with specific fixing systems in place. As a result, we offer these products on a supply-only basis, ensuring flexibility for your project’s individual requirements.
