Double vs Tripple Glazing

When shopping for new windows and doors, many people face the challenge of choosing between double or triple glazing. If you’re not well-versed in window technology, it can be hard to understand the differences or whether an extra pane of glass truly offers significant advantages.

The double-glazed windows and doors deliver exceptional performance, with a U-value of 1.2W/m²K and a sound reduction of 37dB as standard, along with a centre pane U-value of 1.0W/m²K. Current building regulations require a minimum U-value of 1.6W/m²K, which means our double glazing exceeds performance expectations.

However, you might still be considering triple glazing. One reason for choosing triple glazing could be the overall SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculations on a new build or when extending a property, as certain energy efficiency standards must be met. UGS Ltd. is committed to meeting these requirements with the most cost-effective solutions. Rather than offering a higher-performing triple-glazed unit with a U-value of 0.9W/m²K at a premium cost, we focus on long-term customer benefits. In many cases, the extra investment in such an upgrade might be better allocated to other aspects of the build.

What Are Argon-Filled Windows?

In double-glazed windows, the space between the two panes can either be filled with regular air or injected with a gas. While air-filled windows tend to be the more affordable choice and offer some degree of energy efficiency and noise reduction, argon-filled windows are a more worthwhile investment when it comes to long-term performance and energy savings.

Argon is an inert, nonreactive gas, which helps to ensure the windows maintain their effectiveness over time. Unlike oxygen in the air, which can lead to rust and corrosion in metal components, argon prevents such deterioration, ensuring that the windows remain efficient for a longer period.

Additionally, argon is more viscous than air, meaning that molecular movement is slowed down, reducing both heat transfer and heat loss. Argon’s density also makes it heavier than air, which helps to reduce the likelihood of condensation forming between the panes.

These characteristics make argon an ideal choice for high-quality double glazing. Homeowners should opt for argon-filled windows whenever possible, as they offer better insulation, leading to improved heat retention and potentially lowering energy costs. Moreover, argon-filled windows tend to have a longer lifespan, making them a more valuable investment over time.

If you’re thinking about replacing or installing new double-glazed windows in your home, it’s worth taking the time to explore your options and select high-quality products that will stand the test of time. Choosing argon-filled units can enhance the comfort of your home, add value, and lead to greater satisfaction with your property.

Double glazing option

Double Glazing

  • Energy rating A+
  • R value 1.2-1.6 W/m2*K
  • U value 1.2
  • G value 0.71
Tripple glazing option

Tripple Glazing

  • Energy rating A++
  • R value 0.7-1.0 W/m2*K
  • U value 0.9
  • G value 0.61
Argon filled glazing option

Argon Filled

  • Energy rating Improved
  • R value Up to 30% higher
  • U value Up to 25–30% lower
  • G value no signifficant affect

*Energy Rating show overall energy efficiency of the product. The entire window (the frame and the glass) is assessed to allow for heat loss, draughts and solar gain, giving a rating that indicates the overall impact of fitting that window in your home.

*The R Value Measures resistance to heat gain or loss. Example, a typical insulated wall has an R-value anywhere from 12 to 19.

*The U Value of the glass tells us heat loss through the glass, the glass edge and the frame.

*The G Value of the glass tells us how well the glass transmits heat from the sun.

That’s where secondary glazing comes in—an ideal solution for listed properties. Find out more about the Range of Secondary Glazing Units.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Please note that the information provided here is subject to change. For the most up-to-date details, we recommend contacting our company directly.

We offer a 10-year manufacturing warranty on all our glazing units.

Double glazing has two panes of glass with a gap between, while triple glazing has three panes and two insulating gaps, providing better heat retention and soundproofing.

Argon gas fills the gap between panes to enhance insulation by reducing heat loss and preventing drafts.

Triple glazing is ideal for colder climates or areas with high noise levels, offering improved insulation and soundproofing, making it a good long-term investment.

Triple glazing provides superior insulation, with an additional pane and gas layer that reduces heat loss more effectively than double glazing.

With proper care, both double and triple glazing can last up to 20 years or more, depending on maintenance and installation quality.
